Before General Anesthesia & Intravenous Sedation
DO NOT:
- Do NOT eat or drink for eight (8) hours prior to the appointment.
- NO morning coffee
- NO smokeless tobacco
- NO chewing gum
- Exceptions only for regular medications with small sip of water (at least 2 hours prior to appointment)
- Do NOT wear nail polish, jewelry, eye make-up, or contact lenses
DO:
- Responsible adult escort – Every patient undergoing anesthesia must bring an escort. This responsible adult (over 18 years old) will be required to:
- Drive to and from appointment (the patient cannot drive for the rest of the day)
- Sit with the patient in recovery room after surgery
- Understand verbal post-op instructions (written instructions will also be provided)
- If under 18 years old, a parent or guardian must accompany you
- Wear shoes that tie (patient may have difficulty walking in sandals immediately after anesthesia)
- Wear loose fitting, short sleeved blouse or shirt (need arm access for Blood Pressure cuff and IV placement)
**FAILURE TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS MAY CAUSE CANCELLATION AND REAPPOINTMENT**
